The final whistle to end the 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid triggered some Manchester United fans, who pelted Diego Simeone with drinks and objects.
The manager was spotted running towards the tunnel to avoid being hit but he’s now insisted that he ran because he was happy to have qualified for the Champions League quarter-final.
Quoted by the Daily Mirror, Simeone explained his actions in his post-match interview: “When I came off the pitch, I ran because I was happy and I like to enjoy it in the dressing room.
“So I don’t know what happened. What you just said [being pelted by home fans], all I was thinking about was getting into the changing room to the dressing room, and I was really happy.”
“I’m happy. So many people work hard so we can have these moments. It was a brilliant effort from the lads, one of our best games this season.”
That’s a lot of praise from Simeone for a team that qualified because of a biased referee.
Nevertheless, there is no point blaming Simeone or the referee – United have a long road ahead and changes need to happen across the club.
